This Independence Day, let us celebrate the indomitable nature of truth, the infectious spirit of freedom, and the resilience that empowers us to triumph over adversity.
You do not need to be American to treasure these values. Liberty is the birthright of every human being, and when we link arms across the oceans to defend this inalienable right, we foil the attempts of the tyrants to enslave us.
In that vein, it is my privilege to share the breathtaking song We Are Warriors American Kurt Shore composed for the World Council for Health’s 2023 Better Way Conference as exuberantly sung by South African Zolani Mahola, The One Who Sings.
Dr. Tess Lawrie writes of this gift:

Many of us who have devoted our lives to exposing corruption, revealing uncomfortable truths, resisting tyranny, and stopping democide have come under a multifrontal attack from every conceivable angle. Instead of allowing these ambushes to demoralize us as intended, we can perform an aikido maneuver by shifting our perspective to view them as hard-won medals of our efficacy.
The following poem is dedicated to all the truth-tellers besieged by lie-tellers, abusers, bullies, dividers, and defeatists.
Whenever you’re feeling deflated, discouraged, or beaten down, listen to We Are Warriors and read this poem. And keep this post on hand to share with anyone who tries to break you.

You Cannot Break Us

You can target us.
You can bully us.
You can fear-bomb us.
You can scold us.
You can name-call us.
You can gaslight us.
You can banish us.
You can troll us.
You can promulgate lies.
You can even believe those lies.
But it doesn’t make them true.
No matter what you think.
No matter what you feel.
No matter what you do.
Our words speak for themselves.
Our character speaks for itself.
Our love speaks for itself.
You can shun us.
You can shame us.
You can shove us.
You can shackle us.
You can slight us.
You can spite us.
You can strip us.
You can stomp us.
Your whispering only makes you louder.
Your sneaking only makes you rasher.
Your bludgeoning only makes you bloodier.
You can malign us.
You can muffle us.
You can mandate us.
You can mothball us.
You can declaw us.
You can defrock us.
You can debank us.
You can delete us.
Your arrows only fill our quiver.
Your barbs only sharpen our thinking.
Your slashes only craft our kintsugi.
You can sully us.

I will close by saluting three fearless defenders of humanity who embody the spirit of both We Are Warriors and “You Cannot Break Us.”
Remembering Dr. Vladimir “Zev” Zelenko & Prof. Dr. Arne Burkhardt
June 30 marked the one-year anniversary of Dr. Vladimir “Zev” Zelenko’s tragic death from cancer at the tender age of forty-eight. I have long intended to write a Profile in Courage on Dr. Zelenko, but in the meantime, I would like to share this moving tribute by The Vigilant Fox.
On May 30, 2023, we lost another intrepid truth warrior, Prof. Dr. Arne Burkhardt, whose groundbreaking autopsy findings I shared in my piece on his close friend Prof. Dr. Sucharit Bhakdi and who is also slated for a future Profile in Courage. This memorial video from Doctors for COVID Ethics honors Prof. Dr. Burkhardt’s consequential legacy:
Candles for Sucharit
For those of you who missed the outcome of Sucharit’s trial, I posted the following update to his Profile in Courage:
“UPDATE 5/23/23: Dr. Sucharit Bhakdi has been found NOT GUILTY!! Thank you, wonderful readers, for playing a meaningful role in this quest for justice on behalf of the good doctor. When I launched the #IStandWithSucharit campaign, there were zero hits for that hashtag on Twitter—now there are thousands. The candle campaign also caught fire, and the outpouring of support in defense of Sucharit’s good character and noble contributions to humanity has been deeply heartening 🙏🕯🙌”
Two days after the verdict, Chief Public Prosecutor Füssinger appealed the decision, so Sucharit’s case remains in Kafkaesque limbo.
On the eve of Sucharit’s trial, people all over the world lit candles to show their solidarity with Sucharit:
Taylor Hudak posted updates to her Twitter feed as the trial progressed, including this emotional video capturing Sucharit waving at his supporters outside the courtroom and this joyous one announcing his Not Guilty verdict.
Sucharit’s defense attorney, Professor Martin Schwab, stated in the courtroom:
“This is not about anti-Semitism, it is about the fear of those who are responsible for the crimes committed during that false pandemic. They fear that Professor Bhakdi might be called as witness for the prosecution in the tribunal against them once all of this is over.”

I emailed Sucharit immediately following the verdict, and I was touched that he took the time to respond amidst the flurry of media attention on the heels of a nine-hour trial. He gave me permission to share his beautiful words with you:
“Thank you my dear. We are just thankful and are not celebrating. Much is still to be done to stop this crime against humanity. I thank you for everything you are doing and have done.”
Sucharit’s unflagging equanimity and commitment to battling for the people call to mind Thomas Paine’s words:
“I love the man that can smile in trouble, that can gather strength from distress, and grow brave by reflection. ’Tis the business of little minds to shrink; but he whose heart is firm, and whose conscience approves his conduct, will pursue his principles unto death.”
Written in a pamphlet credited with “sav[ing] the Revolution” after it was published on December 23, 1776, these words are preceded by the famous opening salvo that could have been penned for today:
“These are the times that try men’s souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country; but he that stands by it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman. Tyranny, like hell, is not easily conquered; yet we have this consolation with us, that the harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph. What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly: it is dearness only that gives every thing its value. Heaven knows how to put a proper price upon its goods; and it would be strange indeed if so celestial an article as FREEDOM should not be highly rated.”
On this Fourth of July and every day thereafter, let FREEDOM ring!
